Goodbye Laura M

Saratoga losing an essential part of the business community with store closure

It seems like yesterday, a young lady came to this tiny community to pursue a dream. In 1997 Laura Morrow opened a boutique, Laura M, retailing her own designs as well as other apparel that appealed to her eclectic taste. Within just a few short years, she became an icon of fashion and fun. People would come from all over the state to shop at Laura M. The store is known for high quality merchandise, western wear, fur, gifts and fine art.

From her meager beginnings with a portable sewing machine and very little start up money, Morrow also became one of the most recognized and successful business women in the state of Wyoming. She received the Wyoming Women of Influence Award in 2018.

After being in business for over 25 years, Laura M's final day was January 14. Customer Kim Hytrek said she is really going to miss shopping at Laura M. "Everything I wear comes from here," she exclaimed.

Morrow had made the decision to close several months ago but only announced it and put everything on sale in November. She said, "in 2 months we have gotten rid of so much. What I don't sell, I'm going to donate to some orphanages and charities. The rest I will sell online and Posh Mark. Then, who knows what will happen. Laura M is not done, I can guarantee that!"

Morrow said she couldn't believe how many people were showing up to say goodbye. She was touched by the out pouring of support from the community.

When asked if it was an emotional day, Morrow said "this morning–it seemed surreal, but tomorrow might be a different story. I'm so ready to retire after 47 years of being in business and 25 of those here. I love, love my job in this town, but it's just time to move on. I'm not gone though, just changing locations. I'll be back to do the art show and I'll keep that going."

Morrow is excited to start a new chapter in her life. "I miss it (the store) already. I found someone who loves me and wants to go do things with me. I'm excited to move on to another chapter in my life and someplace warmer." She plans to move to Sacramento, California with Alan Lemley whom she intends to marry soon.

Morrow's contributions to the community, the Arts and many other entities will never be forgotten. She leaves a legacy of fund raising and humanitarian actions towards others, as well as introducing the North Platte Valley to fashion and even haute couture. She will be missed by many in this valley and abroad, but after being in business for over 40 years, she has more than earned her chance to travel and spend time with her love.
