Lady Miners battle low numbers

HEM girls hit the court with just six players against tough teams

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners went to Wheatland on February 8 to play the Wheatland sophomores Lady Bulldogs. The game went well for the Lady Miners as they got out on top and didn’t look back. Currently, the Lady Miners have only six players.

“All the girls did really well and played hard,” Head coach for the Lady Miners said. “Hanna Gonzales did some good outside shooting that we missed when she was out on Saturday against our game against Lingle/Ft. Laramie.”

The girls beat the Wheatland team 41-7.

“All the girls contributed not only with scoring, but also with rebounding and steals,” Jones said. “It was nice to get the win.”

The game at Lingel went different.

“We went there with only five girls,” Jones said. ”We knew we were going to have our work cut out for us. Lingle had 18 girls out and didn’t even suit their bottom five.”

Jones said even with the adversity of a team that was going to show little mercy, the Lady Miners did well against the Lady Doggers.

“The girls played hard and tough,” Jones said. “It was actually a tight game and although the score said we lost by 10, it was a much closer than the score said. The girls were pressed full court the entire game and our shoot game woes continue to haunt us.”

Jones said there was total effort and Jones is hopeful the girls will start hitting more shots.

“We always say, once those baskets start to fall, things are going to change for us,” Jones said. “”So we hang our hat on good defense and continue to do our best.”

Jones said she felt the Lady Miners played better basketball than they did on Tuesday.

“In our Lingle loss, they had good post players, good shooters and the girls kept the game closer than the score showed,” Jones said. “There isn’t a girl that I don’t have something positive about. They are a total team. They win and lose together knowing they give it their best.”

The Lady Miners will face Guernsey’s Lady Vikings on Friday at Guernsey and then the Kaycee Lady Buckaroos on Saturday at home.
