Rattlers split weekend

LSRV boys take down Farson, fall to Cokeville while on road

The Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattler High School basketball faced two tough conference opponents this weekend winning the first, and losing the second.

On Friday the Rattlers went on the Road to face the Farson-Eden Pronghorns.

Head coach Rattler Jack Cobb knew it was very possible to lose both games and was happy to see his team do some good things on Friday.

“In this conference, if you don’t show up one night, you are going to get beat. It is hard enough to win even when things are going well,” Cobb said. “The Farson game, I felt we played one of our most complete games far as defensively because the Pronghorns are gritty and tough.”

Cobb said the Rattlers were leading in the 4th quarter when Farson hit a couple 3-pointers and the cushion of 8 points was cut to 2 points.

“I looked up and saw the two point lead and went to myself ‘oh no’, but then the boys went and hit two 3’s of our own,” Cobb said. “If we hadn’t, who knows what would have happened. It makes a big difference obviously if you answer with a 3 when a 3 is scored on you. This night we hit the shots we needed when we needed to.”

The Rattlers beat the Pronghorns 46-40.

The next night in Cokeville, Cobb could not find the formula to take on the Panthers.

“I tried all sorts of looks with my lineups to match up on court and I really didn’t,” Cobb said. “There was a run where we were getting within six points and then Cokeville hit three 3-pointers back-to-back.”

Cobb remembered the night before when his team had an answer to the 3-pointer.

“We didn’t shoot as well as we did against Farson and we got behind and then couldn’t get back,” Cobb said. “This conference is tough and bringing your A game is a must. Farson beat Cokeville last week. It is how it is.”

Cobb gives credit to Cokeville because all of the players are good athletes and are a team that is hard to match up against.

“But we didn’t play as well as we can, and we didn’t have that one or two players that gave us the spark to start playing better,” Cobb said. “I don’t know why exactly the game went the way it did, but to get a win on the road trip we did on the weekend, the loss against Cokeville was not really that bad in the scheme of things. We could have easily lost both.”

The score was Panthers 48 to Rattlers 34.

The week coming up, the Rattlers are playing two Colorado teams in Meeker and Grangley. Cobb said he likes to play these teams because they toughen his team up for conference play.

“We need the experience because we will be playing some tough conference teams in two weeks,” Cobb said. “I said it before and will say it again, in the Southwest conference you can’t afford a loss because it has some of the best teams in the State. One of these excellent teams isn’t going to regionals just because the conference is so tough. I certainly don’t want that team to be us.”
