CCSD2 Superintendent warns of TikTok Trend

Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) advised parents today of a post shared widely on the social media platform TikTok. The post, which appears to be part of a national TikTok trend, refers to a threat to school safety “for every school in the USA, even elementary” on December 17.

The notification comes as the United States saw its 29th school shooting of 2021 on December 1 at a high school in Humboldt, Tennessee.

Parents throughout the district were notified of the post by CCSD2 Thursday afternoon through the district’s eNotes program. The notification was also posted on the CCSD2 website.

CCSD2 Superintendent Jim Copeland wrote “While we do not believe the threat to be credible, we are closely monitoring the situation and taking it seriously.”

Copeland also wrote schools may have an increased police presence on December 17 as an added precaution. According to Copeland, CCSD2 had heard from other school districts who reported the same post circulating in their schools.

“This situation serves as a good example of why it is important to avoid sharing posts online that refer to school safety threats. Even if they are not credible threats, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for our students, families and staff,” wrote Copeland. “We ask our families to monitor their children’s social media activity and speak with them about proper behavior online.”

Copeland concluded his notification by asking any parent or child who becomes aware of any potential threat on social media or anywhere else to notify a school staff member.
