Encampment soaks up Oilers

Tigers deal 60-point loss to Midwest

The Encampment Tigers came out of their first game of the season with a decisive victory as they work to show they belong in six-man football.

On Friday, the Tigers hit the road as they were hosted by the Midwest Oilers. Encampment would end up dominating the Oilers’ gridiron as they ended the match-up with a 60 point lead over the other six-man team.

In the 1st quarter, the Tigers scored 37 unanswered points against Midwest beginning with an interception and 57 yard return by Caysen Barkhurst resulting in 6 points. Barkhurst would put another 6 points on the board with a 34 yard rush and a point-after-touchdown by Michael Anderson put Encampment up 14-0.

A fumble caught by Eddie Buford would put the Tigers up 20-0, with another 2 points added by Anderson with a point-after-touchdown.

As the opening quarter continued, Encampment continued scoring. Koye Gilbert would put up the majority of those with help from other team members. The score would go from 22-0 to 28-0 following a 24 yard pass from Kaban Pickett to Gilbert, followed by another 6 points with a 34 yard pass from Barkhurst to Gilbert. A conversion following a 3 yard pass from Anderson to GIlbert put the Tigers at 35-0 and a safety would put them at 37-0 going into the 2nd quarter.

Midwest would score some in the 2nd quarter, but not enough to overcome the substantial deficit established by the Tigers. While the Oilers were able to drum up 13 points, Encampment put up 20 points of their own before the half.

Kyle Nuhn started the 2nd quarter scoring with a 5 yard rush. That, combined with a 3 yard rush conversion from Anderson put Encampment at 44-0 early in the 2nd quarter. Following a 6 point conversion from Midwest, Quade Jordan rushed for 5 yards to put the Tigers up 50-6 and a conversion from Barkhurst put the score at 51-6.

The Oilers answered back with 7 more points, but an 18 yard pass from Pickett to Anderson ensured Encampment kept their lead as the first half ended with a score of 57-13.

In the second half of the game, the Tigers would score a total of 16 points while keeping Midwest scoreless. The 3rd quarter saw Gilbert receive a 37 yard pass from Pickett and a point-after-touchdown to put the score at 65-13.

The 4th quarter saw Ryon Miller go for a 3 yard rush. That, with another point-after-touchdown from Anderson, gave Encampment their 60 point lead as the buzzer sounded with a score of 73-13.

Though Miller had one touchdown against Midwest, he led the Tigers in rushing with a total of 61 yards over 7 rushes. Barkhurst rushed once for 34 yards and Jordan rushed four times for the same amount. Pickett, meanwhile, was the passing leader with 99 yards and four complete passes. Gilbert was the receiving leader with 95 yards.

The Encampment Tigers are 1-0 for the season with the win against the Midwest Oilers. They will be hosted by the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers at 4 p.m. on September 10.
