Rodeo returning to MedBow?

Medicine Bow residents seek rehabilitation of rodeo grounds

The Medicine Bow Town Council met on August 9 at the Medicine Bow Community Hall.

Mayor Sharon Biamon and all town council members were present.

Councilmember Lucy Schofield said the individual who offered to help with a town splash pad at the town park had not followed through. She said the town did not have monies to fund the project, so the project should be shelved.

Schofield said there was much interest by many residents to get the rodeo grounds back into operation. A committee has already been formed and Schofield said it was time to look at getting funding for a rehabilitation of the grounds.

Public Works Director Charlie George said water would have to be trucked in for events. Schofield she would like to start work on the exterior fence.

George said the meters of the town would be switched out in the coming weeks. He said that a recent microburst did some damage to trees and that some overhangs over public streets needed to be addressed. The council approved George to find a company to do the work. The budget approved was $7,500.

Marshal Dave Redding congratulated the Medicine Bow Fire Department for a successful Tough Truck Event.

“It was well done and well organized,” Redding said.

Redding said 38 citations had been written for the past month totaling $9,000. Redding said that brought the total to $146,876 since he started about a year and half ago. He said the town had to purchase new Mobile Data Terminals (MDT) for the vehicles to be compliant with the state. He estimated it would cost about $41,000 for all the vehicles the hardware and software.

Redding said he was still looking to see if there is a better price than what he quoted the council. He said Medicine Bow Deputy Bob Piper had put in his resignation. He will depart August 22.

Medicine Bow Museum Director Biamon said on September 19, the town’s museum, the Hanna Basin Museum and Elk Mountain Museum would be doing an event together. The time for the event is 2 to 6 p.m. She said it was being catered by several Carbon County restaurants for finger food. The Virginian had offered to help. The monies raised from the event will be split evenly between the museums.

Fire Department Chief Peter Andrews agreed with Redding that the Tough Trucks Event went well. He said Carbon County Council of Governments (CCCOG) was holding a sepcial meeting August 18 to consider a Carbon County Fire District. Biamon said she was not sure joining the district was in the best interest of the town. Both Andrews and Biamon gave the Council more details on how it would work.

“I think there were a lot of questions and answers were skirted at the last CCCOG meeting on this,” Biamon said. “Right now I feel there are too many unanswered questions.”

South Central Wyoming Emergency Services (SCWEMS) Representative Cindy Papisan said the new director was not working out well. He had been gone out of state to fight fires. The board was considering replacing him.

The next scheduled regular meeting will meet at 7 p.m. on September 13 at the Medicine Bow Community Hall.
