Here, there and everywhere

Is it just me or did this summer fly by at the speed of light?

I’m struggling to process the fact school begins in less than two weeks—August 23—let alone the fact July 4 was a month ago and we’ve just survived Carbon County Fair week. How Mike Armstrong and I were able to make it through this past week with our sanity, mostly, I have no idea. We’re just covering the event, I can’t even begin to think of the sheer amount of work it takes to organize the Carbon County Fair.

Honestly, my hats off to the Carbon County Fair Board, Julie Webb, the countless volunteers and the parents of the children and young adults who participate. It is truly awe inspiring.

Throughout the week, Mike and I were likely seen making our way through the fair grounds, from the multiplex to the exhibit hall and back again. We did our absolute best to try and get every aspect of the fair and as many of our Valley fair participants as we possibly could. Of course, we are only human and it is virtually impossible to be everywhere at once.

Because we can’t be everywhere at once, it is often appreciated when people stop us and thank us for the coverage. In the running around Mike and I were doing at different times, we happened to run into each other on Thursday and had a quick discussion about it. He informed me how some members of the fair board had thanked him for being there, which was a similar experience to what I had.

At the end of the day, this is a big reason why we do what we do, even if the days seem to blur together.

For the past two years, Mike and I have been mostly operating as a two-man show when it comes to writing. He’s covered what he can in his area while I’ve worked to cover mine. I also have to commend the young Kaitlyn Campbell, who contributed her share of articles before heading off to college in Laramie these past few months.

In fact, Kaitlyn not only agreed to do articles, but excitedly took on difficult stories such as the Green Mountain at Brush Creek Ranch Planned Unit Development hearings. I, for one, do not remember being as excited about local government at 18 years old as she has been.

Beginning next week, readers of the Saratoga Sun will see another byline alongside Mike and myself. As we continue to cover our communities to the best of our ability, and in some cases expand our coverage, you will see this familiar face at meetings and events. Rather than steal their thunder, I will let them introduce themselves once they officially join our office.

As always, when you see the Saratoga Sun staff out and about, do not hesitate to talk to us. Whether that’s praise for something we did, criticism for something we didn’t do or the other way around or even if it’s just to talk. We, like you, are a part of the community and it’s appreciated to get that reminder from time to time.
