HART plans for future beds

Hanna Agricultural Resource Team discusses gardens in temporary spot

The Hanna Agricultural Resource Team (HART) met on July 20 at the Hanna Market to go over what the organization could still achieve while the weather was good.

The members of HART have had to be flexible with what they could accomplish with their beds since they are not in a permanent location.

The community garden had been moved from its location at property owned by Carbon County School District No. 2 to HART member Chris Karns’ residence temporarily for this summer. C.J. Mahon, the construction company that needed the land where the garden had been located for a cement production facility, will create new beds for HART behind the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School.

“They (C.J. Mahon) said they will make the beds in September,” Perry Goodrich, director of HART said. “By next growing season, we should be back to normal.”

P. Goodrich told the group work at the Hanna Basin Museum was going well. HART is trying to replicate a garden that would have been found around the turn of the 20th century. The townsfolk of Hanna took their gardens seriously and had competitions for the most beautiful.

“We have quite a lot done at the museum,” P. Goodrich said. “We got half of the brick laid and actually are just waiting for more brick to finish it.”

Linda Goodrich, secretary for HART said the construction near the museum on the roads had kept the deer away.

“They haven’t been coming in to the yard at the Miner’s Cottage like they had before in spring,” L. Goodrich said. “Now we are having problems with rabbits.”

The animals are a problem in the present versus the past because any creature caught munching was destined for a cooking pot. Now deer are protected and the museum doesn’t yet have an effective way of keeping rabbits out.

P. Goodrich said the current garden needed to have a set of rules to make sure the area is safe.

“Hoses need to picked up and not left around for people to trip on,” P. Goodrich said. “We aren’t asking anything that is difficult to do, but it needs to be done for insurance reasons. It is all about taking personal responsibility and make sure nothing is hazardous.”

P. Goodrich wanted the group to come back and give ideas on what the rules should be.

The beds to be put up behind the high school are still being visualized by HART.

“We don’t know the budget that they are going to spend for this whole move, but we do know that they have spend some of that money to be where we are with the temporary site,” P. Goodrich said. “We need to know what the budget is for the HEM site.”

The HART monthly BBQ was decided to be held on August 5 at the Veterans Park.

The next scheduled meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. on August 24 at the Hanna Market.
