Rawlins man dies in custody

Nathon Gallant found unresponsive in county jail following arrest for failure to appear

Nathon Christopher Gallant of Rawlins, Wyoming passed away on the evening of June 17 in the Carbon County Detention Center according to a press release from the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office.

Gallant had been placed in the detention center after failing to appear at a jury trial in the Carbon County District Court following a lunch recess. Following an arrest warrant issued by the court, Gallant was arrested without incident by law enforcement. The trial was recessed until June 18 and a $1 million bond was set for Gallant.

Upon his arrival at the detention center, Gallant admitted to the use of methamphetamine and pain pills.

At approximately 7:36 p.m., Gallant was found unresponsive in his cell. An ambulance was requested and NARCAN and CPR were administered by responding EMTs and the Rawlins Fire Department. Gallant, however, was unable to be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at 8 p.m.

The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office has requested an investigation into the cause of death by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation and an autopsy will be performed. According to the press release from the sheriff’s office, no foul play is suspected at this time.
