HEM track and field compete in Kaycee, Rawlins with good results

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School track team had two good track meets according to head track coach Jackie Jones.

"For Kaycee on Friday, it was a chilly, drizzly day, but it was a great meet because both the high school and middle school teams were there," Jones said. "It was excellent for the teams to be there to support each other. It was great that the high school team worked with the middle school team whether it was in the races or the throws."

Jones said the HEM girls placed 2nd and the boys placed 4th.

"We had several placers and Avery Scott has now qualified in the 400 for State," Jones said. "The team did good things and to have back-to-back meets in not the best weather, it is preparing for regionals where it is back-to-back days."

HEM had some wins at Kaycee.

"Taylar Scott placed first in the 100 and the triple jump," Jones said. "Our girls 4 x 400 relay got first. That group was Madison (Campbell), T'ylssa (Solaas), Avery (Scott) and Taylar (Scott). Devon Grosstick won the triple jump. Joseph Borah placed 1st in the shot put."

Jones was really happy with Taylor Kennedy's efforts.

"Taylor had been out because of wisdom teeth operation and was actually not feeling up to his best, but he went out there and won the 800," Jones said. "T'lyssa also won the 100 hurdles, so I can say we definitely had a good day of track in Kaycee."

Jones said the next day was typical Carbon County weather with the wind blowing briskly and the temperature not warm.

"Every kid who competed was in the same conditions as we were and I thought overall it was a great meet for all the teams that participated," Jones said. "There is no doubt, that the teams that came provided excellent competition. I think, as far as track athletes, Carbon County is very well represented as far as having some phenomenal athletes. It was great that we were able to do some good things against so many quality kids coming from all over the county."

T. Scott won the 100 in Rawlins and the girls sprint medley placed first.

"That team was T'lyssa, Avery, Madison and Rainey (Wilson), Jones said. "It was good for them to get out there in the first running event of the meet and take care of business."

Jones said an excellent moment for her was watching the 800 race.

"I had three girls in the 800. It was Rainey, T'lyssa and Avery and coming down the home stretch they were the front three runners and they jockeyed for position doing a tremendous job," Jones said.

"Avery ended up winning, T'lyssa placing 2nd and Rainey coming in 3rd. It was just a neat moment to watch those girls really push each other."

Amy Campbell went into the finals in the shot put.

"Despite the weather, which obviously I can't control, or I would be a millionaire, they finished up the weekend in which I was very proud of them," Jones said. "The athletes were a little tired by the end of the meet at Rawlins on Saturday, but I really believe this weekend was pivotal in getting us ready for regionals."

HEM will be going to Pinedale this Friday for a meet.

"We know it is pretty good jaunt over there, but we have a pretty good relationship with people in Pinedale and it is a great track meet with some excellent competition," Jones said. "We figure we are going to be on the road no matter what, so it is good to go to a place where our kids can go with some good competition."
