HEM drills into Oilers

Miners, Lady Miners see substantial wins before holiday break

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miners and Lady Miners were on their road for the last game of the pre-season as they were hosted by the Midwest Oiler and Lady Oilers on December 18.

Both teams would come off the court with substantial leads over Midwest as several players saw double digit scoring while on the hardwood.

Lady Miners vs.

Lady Oilers

The Lady Miners had originally dealt a loss to Midwest when they hosted the Lady Oilers on December 12 with a final score of 66-17. While Midwest was likely looking to even the score with a home win of their own, it wouldn’t happen. Not only did HEM take out the Lady Oilers, again, but they allowed their junior varsity much needed court time.

“The girls game allowed for our younger players to get some quality playing time,” said Jackie Jones, head coach of the Lady Miners. “It was a balanced attack and our defense was working well.”

Amy Campbell scored 22 points, Rainey Wilson had 10 rebounds and Avery Scott had 7 steals.

The final score was 56-12.

Miners vs. Oilers

Similar to the Lady Miners, the boys also dealt a loss to the Oilers when they hosted them just a week prior as they led 59-33. During the rematch on December 18, the Miners would lead by even more while keeping Midwest from breaking 30.

“The boys saw different players scoring and contributing on offense,” said Cliff Jones, head coach of the Miners. “The focus on working harder definitely was apparent and the boys were able to convert steals into points.”

Devon Grosstick led the Miners in scoring with 17 points. Taylor Widdison had 5 assists and Ura Schmidt had 10 rebounds.

The final score was 66-29.

The next game for both teams will be when they host Encampment on January 8.
