Citizens organized to see violence ended

Carbon County COVE searching for volunteers after more than a decade

On Wednesday June 17, 2020 Citizens Organized to see Violence Ended (COVE) held a meet and greet for volunteers. The turn out was better than expected with not only volunteers from Rawlins, but Saratoga as well. COVE has not had volunteers for the past 13 years and is looking for people to help out.

COVE is a non-profit organization that was started back in the 1980s to help all of Carbon County with advocates for domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.

The organization said that with the COVID-19 restrictions and people staying home, they had been expecting an increase in the need for their services. However, since January, only about half a dozen victims have stayed in the shelter. COVE also provides resources to help victims relocate, advocates to help with court and provide assistance with protection orders.

There are many reasons to volunteer and at the meet and greet, several were pointed out. Ninety-four percent of volunteers say that volunteering improves their mood and 96% report feeling a greater sense of purpose. Another 76% say volunteering reduces their stress levels and makes them feel physically healthier.

Even though there was a great turnout on Wednesday, COVE still needs more volunteers, particularly in outlying towns in Carbon County. The volunteer opportunities range from working with victims, to sorting donations, to answering phones. COVE is also looking for fund raising ideas. Any one interested in volunteering can call COVE at 307-324-7071.

Carbon County COVE has a 24 hour hotline for people in need of assistance. It is 800- 705-7993.
