Saratoga declares vacancy on council

Letters of interest for seat of late councilmember to be accepted until June 12

Ensuing the passing of Councilmember Steve Wilcoxson on May 29, the following meeting of the Saratoga Town Council on June 2 was kept short with a modified agenda. In total, the time from beginning to end was just around 20 minutes. During that meeting, Mayor John Zeiger officially declared a vacancy on the council.

“It is with regret that I’m going to have to declare a vacancy on our council after the passing of Councilman Wilcoxson,” said Zeiger. “So anyone that would be interested in filling the position of Councilman Wilcoxson, which expires at the end of this year, please submit a letter to town hall for the council to review.”

Under Wyoming State Statute 28-18-101, a vacancy is deemed to occur if, among other things, the incumbent in the elective office dies. Additionally, under Wyoming State Statute 15-1-107(c), it reads, “If a vacancy is determined to exist, the governing body shall appoint an eligible person to the office who shall serve until his successor is elected at the next general municipal election and qualified.”

The seat that was held by Wilcoxson before his passing was one of two currently up for election. The unexpired term will last from June to December, as those elected to the two seats on the council will be sworn in on January 5, 2021. The other seat, which is currently held by Councilmember Judy Welton, became vacant on September 17, 2018 following the resignation of JennieLou Garland.

Deadline for letters of interest will be at 5 p.m. on June 12.

The next meeting of the Saratoga Town Council will be at 6 p.m. on June 16 at Saratoga Town Hall.
