HART gets a start

Hanna agriculture group gets going on spring projects

The Hanna Agricultural Resources Team (HART) met for the first time since November at 6:30 p.m. on May 26 at the Hanna Community Garden. HART usually takes a break in the winter time, but starts to reconvene in March. Because of social distancing, the group decided to wait until May and have the meeting outside.

Linda Goodrich, secretary of HART, said that all but three of the two dozen garden beds had been spoken for. One of the beds will be slated to renovated.

Perry Goodrich, president of the group, said they would try and refurbish a bed every year even though most were in good shape.

HART member Ellen Freeman told the group that, on June 16, the town was spraying for noxious weeds. She said for the members to contact the Hanna Town Hall to sign up if anyone wanted their yards taken up.

Perry said the 2019 HART scholarship had not been given out. He said if they did not find a candidate, the money would be held over to help pay for costs that the garden needed.

HART has worked with the Hanna Basin Museum to put in a tea garden next to the cottage building.

At the turn of the 20th century, Hanna used to have competitions for the best tea gardens in town. It became so competitive for the prize to be the best, that people were known to sabotage neighbors yards.

The museum and HART came to an agreement to have the group replicate these gardens with plants and flowers from that time. Currently there are only two trees and grass in the perspective garden.

"It is going to be a chore around the roots," Perry said. "We are going to have to be careful around them."

There are some dead trees that have to pulled out Linda said. The group made arrangements to have a work day starting at 9 a.m. on June 13 at the museum to start the historical tea garden.

Perry said manure slated for the box gardens had been taken by a Hanna resident in the belief that it was for all in the community. He said that the fertilizer should be secured and a sign should be made to let people the manure was for HART members gardens.

A specific work day for the community garden was opted out.

"We can get together on evenings with phone calls and start working on the gardens instead of trying to figure out a day right now," Freeman said.

The next scheduled meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on June 23 at the Hanna Community Garden.
