I spy second place

Med Bow student places 2nd in state for poster contest

A student at Medicine Bow Elementary placed second in the Wyoming State Arbor Day poster contest. Samuel Heward, a 4th grader in Shelly Cooper's class, submitted his poster in the tradition of the Heward family. Other siblings have placed in this contest in years past.

The Wyoming State Forestry Division partnered with Wyoming Project Learning Tree again this year to host the annual Wyoming State Arbor Day poster contest. This year's theme was "I Spy Trees." Over 175 4th and 5th grade students from around the state participated in the contest.

Heward got his idea of animals talking to each other from the movie "Brother Bear". Instead of bears, he used two moose speaking to each other about eating.

"My favorite part of the poster was drawing the sunset in the background," Heward said.

Heward will receive $50, his framed poster and a plaque.

Cooper said she was proud of her student.

"Sam is a talented student, just like all his family," Cooper said. "He is a great kid and I am thrilled he did so well."

It took effort to get the poster contest under way this year since the schools were closed before the deadline of submission.

"We are grateful to our sponsors and the teachers who took the time to send in their students' artwork, despite school closures at the time of the contest deadline." said Jessica Halverson, contest coordinator.

Halverson said this year the contest was a little different due to the schools closings. Usually a poster is picked from each class and then sent to the contest. This means that close to 400 posters are entered but, because of the school closures, posters were sent in from individuals. Halverson was happy so many students still participated given the adversity of schools being closed.

This year, Wyoming will celebrate its 132nd Arbor Day. Due to COVID-19, the Arbor Day Celebration will be held in the fall. This year's winners, their families and teachers will be invited to celebrate.

"I am really looking forward to this celebration. We will all be ready for it after so many months in quarantine!" said Halverson.
