Safe2Tell Wyoming used more in 2019

Program saw nearly 1,800 tips in 2019, up 37.6% from year before

Safe2Tell Wyoming released its 2019 statewide numbers on February 1 and reported a record number of tips during the calendar year. According to a press release from the school safety tip line, in fact, Safe2Tell received nearly 1,800 actionable tips. This is a 37.6 percent jump from 2018.

“Students and concerned adults made 662 more tips to the Safe2Tell Wyoming program in 2019 than the previous year,” read the press release. “Students submitted the most tips using a mobile browser, which is a shift from the previous years, where the mobile app was the primary method of reporting.”

Bill Morse, the Safe2Tell Wyoming Program Manager is quoted in the release as saying “The increase shows the level of trust students have in the program in their willingness to take on the responsibilities needed to report concerning behaviors.”

Since the inception of the program in October 2016, Safe2Tell Wyoming has received 3,717 actionable tips. While school attacks, which was the original reason for the program, remain a top concern, the program has become a resource to report other concerns or threats to school and student safety.

This year, for example, saw the debut of “vaping” as a tip category with 229 tips, or 13 percent of the total tips reported in 2019. This put it at the No. 2 most reported tip. At the top of the list, with 10 more tips and at 13.5 percent, were suicide threats. According to an infographic provided by Safe2Tell Wyoming, suicide threats remain the top reported tip since the programs inception over three years ago.

Further information provided by Safe2Tell Wyoming showed that, by days of the week, Wednesday was the highest day of reported tips at 19 percent. Eighteen percent of tips were reported on Tuesday and 16 percent of tips were reported on Thursday and Friday. Additionally, the highest tip volume occurred between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The data provided by Safe2Tell Wyoming was taken from reports received by the program between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019. Safe2Tell is a confidential program. Tips can be submitted by calling 1-844-WYO-SAFE, using the free mobile app or through safe2tellwy.org.
