Miners beat the Outlaws

Miners, Lady Miners get wins against Rawlins junior varsity at home

On January 14, the Rawlins JV boys and girls basketball teams came to Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School to take on the Miner teams.

Lady Miners

The Lady Outlaws had some players that were tall and big in comparison to HEM. They looked to be a varsity team as they came out guns-a-blazing. The smaller HEM team had their work cut out for them.

At first the Lady Miners pulled ahead in the first quarter and the Lady Outlaws found themselves 13-8 going into the next quarter. A scoring flurry by the Rawlins team had them tied 13-13 with 6:43 left in the 2nd quarter. The Lady Miners watched the Lady Outlaws take a six point lead at 13-19 with 3:40 to go before the half. Head cCach Jackie Jones called a time out.

It worked. The Lady Miners scored with a little over a minute left before the half and the score was 15-19.

Rainey Wilson hit a 3-pointer with thirty seconds left before the half and the Lady Miners went into the locker room down one point, 18-19.

HEM took the lead in the 3rd quarter, 21-20, and a seesaw battle started for the lead. The Lady Outlaws seemed to be winning the battle when they went ahead 36-40 with five minutes left in the game. The next minutes had both teams scoreless, then HEM tied it up with nine seconds left in the game. The game went into overtime.

The game stayed tight at 45-45 with 1:09 left. Then Amy Campbell hit a shot with 45 seconds left to give the Lady Miners the lead 47-45 and, twenty seconds later, Taylor Scott stole the ball and got to the basket making it 49-45. Her points broke the Lady Outlaws and they gave up the ball again. The Lady Miners scored one more time before the game ended, making it 51-45.

"The Lady Miners hung on to get a win against a talented Rawlins JV team," Jackie said. "It was a great game from the buzzer, and the girls were pleased to come up with a win. It was a good test against a team with tall and physical post players."

Miners

The boys basketball team came out against the Rawlins JV and took control from the onset. This was their first game in 2020. Their last game was on December 14 and a month had gone by since the team had played any opponent.

"It was nice to be able to play a game. We have only had two games in the last month," Head Basketball Coach Cliff Jones said. "With the weather changing games, some teams rescheduled us to later in the season because of conflicts they now face and other teams simply dropped us from their schedule, so it was nice to be able to play a game against the Rawlins JV and get some live action."

The Miners went ahead quickly, but the Outlaws didn't give up. The Miners led at halftime.

"We played well at times but our rust showed at times as well," Cliff said.

The rust was off by the 4th quarter. The score was 44-25 with 7:07 left in the game. The Miner coach was mixing in starters and other players by this time. The less experienced Miners did have the Outlaws score on them but they didn't buckle. With 2:07 left in the game the score was 46-31 but it was too little, too late. The Miners won 54-34.

The leading scorer was Conor McGraw with 16 points. Shane McGraw led the team with 15 rebounds and Devon Grosstick had five steals.

The head coach of the girls basketball team who was watching, noted the team did well after a long break.

"The Miners played a Rawlins JV team that pushed them to be efficient on offense and focus on defense," Jackie said. "It was a game where many Miners were able to get playing time and contribute to the win."

HEM will have played the Rock River Longhorns on January 21 and will play in Glendo at 4 p.m. on January 24.
