Saratoga girls basketball goes 2-1 in Shoshoni despite illnesses on team
The Saratoga Lady Panthers were able to go into the holiday break with a 2-1 weekend as they attended the Wrangler Invite in Shoshoni. The first game for the girls was against the 2A Rocky Mountain Lady Grizzlies and was also their only loss. As the weekend progressed, the Lady Panthers would see wins against the 2A Shoshoni Lady Wranglers and the 1A Meeteetse Lady Longhorns.
“We headed into the Shohoni tournament a little short-handed this weekend because of injuries and the stomach flu, but the girls played really hard and we ended up with some good wins. A lot of our younger girls ended up getting some good playing-time and it ended up being a good weekend for us,” said Heather Bartlett, head coach for the Lady Panthers.

“We played Rocky Mountain on Friday and we were really short-handed for this game,” Bartlett said. “We played well in the first half and we were tied at half-time, but we got into some foul trouble in the second half and couldn’t hang on.”
In the 1st quarter, Saratoga came out onto the hardwood in force as they put 10 points on the board while keeping the higher conference Rocky Mountain to only a single basket. The 2nd quarter, however, saw the roles slightly reversed as the Lady Grizzlies put 16 points on the board and Saratoga scored a total of 7 points in the second half.
As the second half began, the Lady Grizzlies put another 19 points on the scoreboard while Saratoga managed 9 points. In the final quarter, the Lady Panthers were able to keep Rocky Mountain to single digits while scoring 6 points of their own.
Freshman Whitney Bennett was the lead scorer against the Lady Grizzlies with 12 points, 18 rebounds and 3 steals. W. Bennett was followed by Savannah Wells, who scored 6 points and had 4 rebounds and 5 steals. Sam Fiedor scored 5 points against Rocky Mountain and had 4 rebounds and 1 steal and Tasia Daley scored 4 points, had 10 rebounds and 3 steals.
The final score against the Lady Grizzlies was 29-46.

Saratoga didn’t let the loss to Rocky Mountain keep them down for long. The next game for the Lady Panthers was against Shoshoni and would see Saratoga get a win under their belt.
“This was a great game, we were neck-and-neck the entire way. The game came down to the wire, we were tied at the end of the game and Sam Fiedor got fouled on a 3-pointer with three seconds left,” said Bartlett. “She made one of them to put us over the top for the win.”
Wells was the lead scorer against the Lady Wranglers with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. W. Bennett followed with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 2 steals. Senior Taylor Bennett scored 5 points against Shoshoni and had 3 rebounds and 2 steals while Shelby Knotwell scored 4 points and had 1 rebound and 1 steal.
The Lady Panthers took down Shoshoni by a single point, with a final score of 43-42.

Lady Longhorns
The final game of the weekend for Saratoga was against their only 1A opponent.
“This was a tough game as well with some injuries affecting us during the game,” Bartlett said. “Meeteetse was a long stronger than we had been expecting with several of their girls shooting really well from the 3-point line during the game. Our girls worked hard the whole game and were able to pull off another good win.”
W. Bennett was the lead scorer against the Lady Longhorns with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals. T. Bennett followed with 7 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals while Daley scored 7 points, had 3 rebounds and 6 steals. Senior Makiya Johnson scored 5 points against Meeteetse and had 3 rebounds and 4 steals and Knotwell scored 6 points and had 1 rebound and 3 steals.
After the Wrangler Invite, the Lady Panthers are 2-4 for the season so far. They will get a break from gameplay over the holidays before they travel to take on the Rock River Lady Longhorns at noon on Jan. 4 in Rock River.
