A matter of BRAND-ing

Memorial Hospital of Carbon County partners with University of Wyoming

Memorial Hospital of Carbon County (MHCC) recently announced their partnership with the University of Wyoming (UW) to offer distance learning for students pursuing a nursing degree. For the 2019-2020 program year, MHCC has been selected as a hospital for UWs Bachelors Reach for Accelerated Nursing Degree (BRAND) program. The BRAND program, according to the press release from MHCC, offers individuals the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing within 15 months if they have a previous non-nursing bachelor’s degree.

The program, the press release went on to say, offers rural hospitals in the state of Wyoming the opportunity to “grow their own” Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This prepares nurses by hosting students and providing valuable hands-on, clinical experience. During their clinical time at MHCC, students will work one-on-one with a UW instructor and MHCC nursing staff to cover 10 hour shifts.

According to information from the UW website, BRAND does not require students living in Wyoming to relocated to Laramie for the program. The fall semesters are when the acute care clinical care sites are provided and have included Casper, Evanston, Gillette, Jackson, Wheatland and Rock Springs.

BRAND, according to the UW website, attempts to work around the Wyoming winter weather and distances by using current technology to reduce travel requirements. As part of that program, students engage in face-to-face portions of the class using internet technology to deliver real-time interaction with instructions.

The final semester of the program will have students placed in a Wyoming acute care location on a full-time basis for the entire semester.

Five BRAND students will spend three weeks at MHCC beginning on Sept. 11. An additional five students will be on site in October and will finish their curriculum in November.
