From Boot Hill to paradise

June 29 Museum trek tours Cadwell and Saratoga cemeteries, CCC camp and location of first county fair

Ever wonder what it takes to convert a cemetery from "Boot Hill" to a place of beauty comparable to paradise?

To find out the answer, attend a Saratoga Museum sponsored historic trek of both Cadwell and Saratoga Cemeteries east of town.

Local historian and tour guide Dick Perue has put together a panel of experts to explore both cemeteries and relate their histories, as well as community efforts to beautify them.

In addition to exploring burial plots, the trek will include visiting the site of the Civilian Conservation Corp camp at stone gates the location of the first Carbon County Fair & Rodeo. Concluding the tour will be a bring-your-own sack lunch and drinks along with a video program at the Cemetery Pavilion Chapel on the history of the area being explored.

Those wishing to join the trek are invited to meet at the Saratoga Museum at 104 Constitution Ave.

According to Saratoga Museum Director Kimberly Givens, charges for the trek are by donation only, so "please be generous and help support our museum."

Trek participants need not be members of the Saratoga Historical and Cultural Association, but Givens said joining the group would be appreciated.

The trek will begin at 10 a.m. on June 29.
