Battle Pass follows suit

Hwy 70 opens a week after the Snowy Range

A week after Memorial Day, Wyoming Highway 70 over Battle Pass has been cleared by the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) and opened for the season on Monday, June 3.

“Crews from Saratoga and Baggs have been working to clear the road from their respective sides of the Sierra Madre and have completed that work,” said WYDOT Public Relations Specialist Matthew Murphy in an email on Monday. “They worked through this past weekend to get the road open this morning.”

Murphy also advised that travelers watch for patches of frozen runoff due to high country conditions.

WYO 70 and WYO 130 are just two of several high-elevation mountain roads in Wyoming with season closures. WYO 130, according to Murphy, has a peak elevation of 10,800 feet while WYO 70 crosses the Continental Divide at 9,955 feet. Both roads close annually in the late autumn months.

WYO 130 closed on Nov. 3, 2018 and WYO 70 closed on Nov. 23, 2018.

In recent years, WYO 70 has opened as early as May 15, in 2012, and as late as June 9, in 2016.
