A 'green' start to summer

Saratoga Lions Club invites youth to participate in Junior Golf Program

In 1977 Saratoga Lions Club members Avon Brock, Bob Randall, and Jim Hull got together with other Lions Club members and came up with the idea for the Junior Golf Program both to teach the sport and to give kids from 5 to 17 years a fun activity to begin their summer.

The group began the program by cutting down donated adult clubs to fit younger golfers and, in the 90s, Saratoga Lions Club member Bob Lauman was still cutting clubs to fit.

Last year’s program had about 35 youths participate and the Lions Club expects an even larger turnout this year.

This year’s event begins with a $15 registration per child and covers clubs and time on the driving range, putting green and golf course. The fee also includes a cookout for players and their families to be held Tuesday, June 25 at noon on Veterans Island.

Involved youth will be divided into four age groups for instruction on the putting green and driving range and will eventually partake in a tournament held June 24 and 25. Lessons will be provided by golf pros and experienced golfers from the area.

Registration forms are available at local schools and the Saratoga Hot Springs Resort Golf Shop and the deadline to register is Monday, June 10.
