It's a Spring Thing

New home, garden and outdoor show to be held at the PVCC Saturday, May 4

A wealth of ideas for enjoying and taking advantage of the coming warmer days will be offered to area residents Saturday at “It’s a Spring Thing: From Guns to Roses,” a new home, garden and outdoor show to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 at the Platte Valley Community Center (PVCC).

The show will feature several exhibitors in the center’s Great Hall, plus several workshops on related topics outside and in the center’s training rooms. The show is sponsored jointly as a public service project of the Valley Service Organization (VSO), Bridge Street Bargains and the PVCC, according to Kate Sherrod, event coordinator for VSO.

Admission is free for all ages.

The show is designed to highlight the many activities that make the warm weather months in the Valley so enjoyable, Sherrod said. Booths will include flower and vegetable gardening; shooting activities, national forest recreation; warm weather health hazards such as sunburn, insect and animal bites, heat exhaustion, hypothermia, West Nile and Hanta virus and more; summer skin care; horse and buggy ride information; bird and wildlife photography; the latest in ATVs; clever ways to make old things new; fishing information and gear; knife and sheath sales, knife repairs and sharpening; metal decorations for in- and outdoors; novelty tee shirts, hats, and other items; general information on Valley attractions and special events, how to check out a telescope at the Saratoga Library and get free seeds from its seed library, camping gear sales and free toys from Bridge Street Bargains; handmade jewelry from natural stones and gems, and much more.

Workshops include an introduction to fly fishing for adults and children; camp cooking with dutch ovens for adults along with campfire pie making for children; kite making and safety for children, with each child receiving his or her own free kite; an introduction to gun handling and general safety for children and adults; foraging for and cultivating wild mushrooms, and transplanting seedlings to name just some.

A full listing of exhibitors and workshops, with workshop schedules is available online at bit.ly/TOGIESPRING, and schedules will also be available at the door.

Sherrod said a highlight of the day will be a drawing for a crisp, new $100 bill. The winner need not be present at the drawing, although the tickets will only be available at the show.

Three food trucks will also be at the PVCC during the day for when hunger or just the need for some refreshment strikes.
