Six firsts and a broken record

HEM track takes six first place ribbons, breaks school record in girls 1600 sprint medley over weekend

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School field and track team shined at the Rawlins Invite on Friday and the Ted Schroeder Meet in Rock Springs on Saturday.

Taylar Scott placed 1st in the three events she participated at Rawlins. She also had a 1st place finish in Rock Springs.

“Taylar Scott continues to excel in her events every meet,” Head Track Coach Jackie Jones said. “She has a dedication to the sport of track and to become faster and stronger. Being a sophomore and an athlete from a 1A school are excuses this young lady never uses.”

In Rawlins, Scott won the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.43. She took 1st in the 400 meter run at 1:04.10 and won the triple jump going 32’09’’.

“It is exciting to see her compete and lead her teammates by example,” Jones said.

Scott was not the only female member of the team to win an event.

Amy Campbell placed 1st in the long jump hitting 15’ 09”. She also earned points for the team coming in 5th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.12. Campbell proved she could not only run, but throw, too, by placing 7th in the shot put at 29’01” and 7th in the discus throw at 83’05”.

Her twin sister, Madison, also scored points for the team placing 5th in the 1600 meter run, timed at 6:33.33.

Sabrina Geller came right behind her in the 1600 meter run with a time of 6:55.50 to take 6th place.

Rainey Wilson placed 7th in the 400 meter run at 1:12.73.

Wilson, M. Campbell, Geller and T’Lysa Solaas came in 2nd in the 4x400 meter with a time of 4:49.18.

“We had four more girls qualify for state so that is certainly a testament to their work,” Jones said. “Our boys are also continuing their improvement in all our events.”

The McGraw twins both had 1st place finishes in an event.

Conor McGraw came in 1st in the 110 meter hurdle at 15.62. He came in 2nd in the 100 meter dash at a time of 11.75 and 2nd in the 200 meter dash coming in at 23.27.

Shane McGraw came in 1st in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:07.78. He came in 3rd in the long jump at 19’ 02” and 3rd in the triple jump at 40’ 04”.

In the 4x400 meter relay, the boys team of Taylor Widdison, Devon Grosstick, Jase Smith and Cody Swingholm came in 3rd at 3:57.84.

Grosstick came in 4th in the triple jump at 37’08” 6th in the Long Jump at a distance of 18’ and 7th in the 400 meter run at 1:00.15.

Widdison placed 5th in the 1600 meter run at 5:23.85 and Jase Smith came in 5th in the 300 meter hurdle at a time of 48.92.

“Our girls and boys are putting out amazing effort and it is paying off,” Jones said.

The Ted Schroeder Meet in Rock Springs did not have so many 1st place finishes, but the Miners did well.

Scott came in 1st in the 100 meter dash with a time of 27.33. She placed 8th in the triple jump with a distance of 31’06”.

The 1600 sprint medley had the girls team of both Campbells, Scott and Wilson come in 3rd at 4:54.10.

“Our girls medley relay team broke the school record in Rock Springs on Saturday,” Jones said proudly. “The boys are putting together solid meets, and the work they put in practice is proof of that.”

S. McGraw came in 1st in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.98.

C. McGraw placed 2nd in the 300 meter hurdle at 41.87.

“Many of our athletes saw personal bests at the two meets we attended,” Jones said. “Several earned placings.”

The next scheduled track meet is the Kaycee Invite on April 12.
