Miners make most of meet

HEM track qualifies four for state, and gets new athletes a taste of track and field events

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School track had to cancel their scheduled meet in Wheatland on Saturday, but went to the Jerry Campbell Invitational in Buffalo instead.

"The HEM track team had a great showing in Buffalo considering we were at the tail end of spring break," Head Track Coach Jackie Jones said. "Many athletes committed themselves to workouts over break and it showed."

Taylar Scott placed in all the events in which she participated.

She came in 3rd in the girls 100 Meter Dash with a time of 12.92. In the girls 400 Meter Dash, Scott placed 4th with a time of 1:04.90. Her best showing at the meet was coming in 2nd in the girls triple jump at 31' 01".

"Sophomore, Taylar Scott, had a huge day placing in all three of her events," Jones said. "The highlight of the day for her was beating her own school record in the 100 Meter Dash by clocking a time of 12.92. Taylar is now qualified for state in four events."

The Lady Miners had another team member pre-qualify for state.

"Amy Campbell also had a successful day qualifying for state in the long jump and 100 Meter Dash," Jones said.

Campbell came in 6th in the girls Long Jump at 14' 10" and placed 8th in the 400 Meter Dash in a time of 1.04.90.

The boys team had one member come in first at a racing event.

Shane McGraw came 1st in the 400 Meter Dash in a time of 51.67.

"Shane placed in two events with his shining moment being the 400 Meters," Jones said. "Shane won the event in state qualifying time against talented runners from 4A schools."

S. McGraw came in 3rd in the boys Triple Jump at 37' 08.50".

His twin brother Conor also did well at Buffalo.

"Conor had another successful meet placing in all three of his events and added the 200 Meter Dash to his list of five that he is now pre-qualified in for state."

In the 100 Meter Dash, C. McGraw ran a time of 11.50 for an 8th place finish that added to the team's points. He came in 4th in the 200 Meter Dash at 23.19 and, in his best event, the 110 Meter Hurdle, C. McGraw came in 2nd at 15.89.

Although other members of the HEM track team did not place, Jones was happy with their efforts.

"Many rookie members of the HEM squad got their first taste of high school track and field on Saturday," Jones said. "They showed great effort and competed hard. We are looking forward to having two meets this week for kids to get even more exposure and experience."

The next scheduled meet is at 11 a.m. on April 4 in Rawlins for the Rawlins Invite.
