Crime victims week

National Crime Victims Rights Week honored in Carbon County to raise awareness

The Carbon County Sheriffs Victim/Witness Program recognizes April 7-13, 2019 as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week by raising awareness about crime victims’ issues, promoting victims’ rights and honoring victims of all crimes.

The 2019 theme, “Honoring our past. Creating hope for the future” reminds us that when we come together to support and assist victims of all crimes, we help the healing of victims and survivors and also help break the cycle of violence. Through community action and service, we all be come stronger, together.

Each year in Carbon County we are asked to reach out,to listen and to support victims of all crimes as they pursue safety, justice and healing.

The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) in Washington, D. C. leads our country in their annual observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week by honoring and celebrating the achievements of the past 35 years. In 1984, the bipartisan Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) was enacted. This was historic legislation. The national funds support crime victim compensation programs in all 50 states. These funds help reimburse victims for many out-of-pocket expenses resulting from the crime such as medical care, counseling, funerals and lost wages.

VOCA funds also support services for victims of all types or crime including assistance for homicide survivors, survivors of child sexual abuse and victims of human trafficking. VOCJ funds help victim/witness programs, rape crisis centers and domestic violence programs. In Carbon County, the VOCA funds received by the Carbon County Sheriffs Victim/ Witness Program ensure that services are available to assist victims of all crimes.
