Outlaw leads to State

Speech team brings home 2nd place at Outlaw Invite in Rawlins, next stop State in Riverton

Over the weekend, the four member Saratoga speech team traveled the shortest distance it has all season as they went to Rawlins to complete in the Outlaw Invite. While there, sophomore Shelby Randall and senior Leila Randall broke into semi-finals. Saratoga also returned home with a 2nd place Sweepstakes trophy.

The Rawlins meet brings an end to the regular season and the next venture for the speech team will be the State Tournament in Riverton this weekend. According to Johnny Mercer, head coach of the speech team, all four members will be able to head to Riverton to compete. Senior Kailey Hytrek will compete in poetry, L. Randall will compete in Program Oral Interp (POI), junior Kaylyn Hunter will compete in poetry and POI and S. Randall will compete in poetry and humor.

“The upside is, at this point in the season, all of our girls have now had experience in the later part of a tournament and experience speaking to a panel of judges,” said Mercer. “Hopefully, with some dedicated practice and preparation coupled with late-round experience, Saratoga will have come success stories to share from State in Riverton.”

Following the State Tournament in Riverton starting March 7, the final meet for the speech team will be at the Wind River District tournament in Green River.
