A legion of trees

McIlvaines selling trees, wreaths to help the American Legion with Tyler Pickett Park

Scott and Michelle McIlvaine wanted to help out the American Legion, specifically with Tyler Pickett Park.

To that end, the McIlvaines purchased 85 trees and 35 wreaths worth $3,500. After paying that bill, all the profits will go to the American Legion.

The pair will be selling those trees in Veterans Park which is located downtown between Lollypops and Studio T.

Already, several community members have purchased trees or wreaths and donated a little extra to the cause.

Of this, Michelle said. "Christmas spirit, man."

To help with the cause, Randy Stevens donated the use of the metal tree stands for the effort.

Before the trees arrived, the McIlvaines cleaned up Veterans Park which is owned by the Legion.

Scott said they, "raked all the leaves up, raked the pinecones, picked up trash, and trimmed the big tree (currently the town's Christmas tree)."

The pair, aided by their employee in these endeavors, J.T. Perue, also put up lights around the park.

To get the trees and wreaths, the McIlvaines took a four-hour trip down to Colorado where they purchased the Douglas, Fraser and Norman Firs whose origins are from either North Carolina or Oregon.

Describing the inventory, Scott said "We have a variety of sizes, from four-and-a-half footers to eight-and-a-half footers." Scott added, "We also have a twelve footer for the bank (Rawlins National Bank)-it's massive."

Scott recently told the Sun that, as a special surprise, Santa would be showing up at the Park at 11 a.m. next Saturday.

The McIlvaines expect to present a check to the American Legion Post No. 54 in the coming weeks.
