Lady Miners head to Regionals

Hanna Volleyball players carry a conference second place to Newcastle

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) high school volleyball team had a tough week in that they lost to Rock River on Oct 16 and Encampment on Saturday.

Head volleyball coach Jackie Jones said no team likes to lose, but she encourages the Lady Miners to learn from their mistakes as they face Upton at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in Newcastle in the regional tournament.

The loss to Rock River was a seesaw battle. The Lady Miners won the first match 25-19. The Lady Longhorns came back to win the next match 25-18, only to lose the next one with the Lady Miners winning handily 25-14.

Rock River didn't give up and came back to take the next game in a close match 26-24. The deciding game got away from the Lady Miners and they lost 15-4.

Jones said although the loss was a bit difficult to take, the Lady Miners played the Lady Longhorns much tougher than when they met earlier in the year on Oct. 6. HEM did beat Rock River on Sept. 11.

On Saturday, the Lady Miners met the Encampment Lady Tigers in Encampment. The Lady Tigers had lost to the Lady Miners on Sept. 7 earlier in the season when HEM hosted. The Lady Tigers wanted revenge and got it winning all three games. The first score was 25-12, but the second game, the Lady Miners put up a strong fight. They lost 26-24. The Lady Tigers took the last game 25-12.

Jones is now looking to the future and not dwelling on the losses of the past week.

"We are going to regionals in second place in conference," Jones said. "I am proud of what the girls have accomplished this season so far and look forward to a great time at the tournament."
