Saratoga Cross Country braves cold weather to do well in final race of the season

Saratoga’s long distance runners took off to Cheyenne on Friday for their final race of the season before the state championship on Oct. 20 in Sheridan. Participating in the Leroy Sprague Invitational, the student athletes of Saratoga Middle/High School ran in cold weather as well as rain. Women’s junior varsity runner Kaitlyn Campbell did exceptionally well, finishing 30th out of 122 runners with a time of 26:25. Men’s junior varsity runner Kelton Johnson finished with a time of 20:18, placing 14th out of 99 runners.

“(I’m) awfully proud of these kids who competed in such unfavorable conditions,” said head coach Rex Hohnholt. “All races were cold, but some of the race experienced rain on top of the cold. (It was) very hard to run in some of those races, but we have some amazing kids.”

In the men’s varsity race, which had a total of 96 runners, Encampment’s Jarom Herring placed 22nd after finishing with a time of 18:06. Jeremiah Debar placed 74th with a time of 20:05 and Gavin Bartlett finished with a time of 21:31, placing 91st.

“On the high school side, we finished our regular season and now begin our final preparations in what (we) hope to be a very successful postseason,” said Hohnholt.

Now that the regular season is over, the next race for the SM/HS cross-country team will be on Saturday, Oct. 20 in Sheridan when they compete in the state championship.
