Man falls to death

Hiker (19) dies in fall at South French Creek Overlook

On Sunday, June 10, 2018 at approximately 8:30 p.m. the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Cole Nuhring, stating his friend later—to be identified as Justin Siler (19)— had fallen off a boulder at the South French Creek overlook.

Deputy Justin Hale was notified and responded to the scene. Search and Rescue personnel were also notified to respond, while in route to the location EMS, Classic Air Medical were also notified to respond.

Upon arrival, the location of where Justin Siler had fallen was approximately 30’ feet down off the cliff. Deputy Hale and EMS arrived at the location. He was deceased due to injuries.

The extraction of the deceased was led by search and rescue member who had to utilize rappelling gear to retrieve the body.

The search and rescue members are as follows: Landon McGuire, Randy Sikes, Chuck McVey, Creed James, Nick Carey, Tate Stenson, Aaron Anderson, Brandon Gray, Bill Young and Tom Hunt, EMT Dan Starr, John Zieger, Dan Beach and Carrol Black.

At approximately 1:05 a.m. on June 11, 2018 the mission was complete.

After further investigation the incident was determined to be accidental with no foul play involved.

A debrief was conducted with Search and Rescue Personnel and EMS involved in the accident.
