Record breaking continues

Encampment track sets four more school records, prequalifies more for State

After having performed for the hometown crowd last weekend, the Encampment Tigers left the Valley once again to attend the Thermopolis Bobcat Invite on Friday, May 4 in Thermopolis and the Shane Brock Invite on Saturday, May 5 in Lander.

“We had another successful weekend attending two track meets,” said Kegan Willford, head coach of the Encampment track team. “We had more athletes achieve pre-qualifying standards and had four more school records broken.”

Paige Powell, junior, and Cheyanne Jordan, senior, helped the team get points at the Bobcat Invite with Powell and Jordan placing 1st in a total of three field events. Powell placed 1st in both discus, with a distance of 123 feet, 4 inches, and high jump, with a height of 4 feet, 11 inches. Jordan placed 1st in shot put with a distance of 36 feet, .5 inches.

Powell would also place 2nd in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet, 5.25 inches.

Amber Stubbs placed 5th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 42 seconds and would be followed by Lauren Buford placing 7th with a time of 2 minutes, 46 seconds.

In the 4x800 meter relay, the team of Buford, Grace Tieszen, Micaiah Pantle and Amber Stubbs placed 3rd and prequalified for State with a time of 11 minutes, .99 seconds.

While competing in Lander, the Encampment girls would reset the record book in three different events. Powell again placed 1st in discus with a distance of 126 feet, 7.5 inches and set a new school record. Powell also placed 1st in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 7 inches and triple jump with a distance of 34 feet, 9.5 inches.

Jordan placed 3rd in shot put with a distance of 36 feet, 7 inches and also set a new school record.

Stubbs placed 1st in the 3200 meter run with a time of 12 minutes, 57.34 seconds and set a new school record as well.

Buford placed 5th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 44 seconds, followed by Tieszen with a time of 2 minutes, 45 seconds.

Reid Schroeder would also help the team get points at the Bobcat Invite, placing 1st in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 41 seconds. Following Schroeder would be Jarom Herring, who placed 2nd with a time of 11 minutes, 8 seconds. Herring also prequalified for State in this event.

Wyatt Cox placed 4th in discus with a distance of 125 feet, 8 inches and Sean Stewart placed 5th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 8 seconds.

In the 4x400 meter relay, the team of Jackson Cor, Dalton Peterson, Cody Cor and Kyler Miller placed 7th with a time of 3 minutes, 54.77 seconds.

In Lander, Schroeder would break a school record in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 47.20 seconds and placing 4th in the event. Herring would, again, follow Schroeder, placing 5th with a time of 4 minutes, 52.64 seconds. Herring would also prequalify for State in this event. Stewart would also prequalify for State in the 1600 meter run and place 6th with a time of 4 minutes, 52.71 seconds.

Stewart also placed 5th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 14 seconds.

C. Cor placed 4th in the triple jump with a distance of 34 feet, 9.75 inches. Miller would follow C. Cor by one spot, placing 6th with a distance of 34 feet, 8 inches.

Cox placed 6th in discus with a distance of 126 feet, 7.5 inches.

With the conclusion of these two events, Encampment’s student athletes now prepare for the upcoming regional and State track meets. Encampment track will compete in the west regionals starting on May 11 in Lander.

“We hope to see our team peak within the next two weeks with regionals and state approaching,” said Willford.
