Dishing on a scam

The Saratoga Sun received word on Monday that a scam, operating under the guise of satellite provider Dish Network, is targeting Valley residents.

Dawn Senior-Trask, of Encampment, informed the Sun on the morning of March 26 that she had received a call from someone claiming to work for Dish Network offering a software update for her satellite receiver.

According to Senior-Trask, the call was “almost believable” as the scammer had her phone number, physical and mailing address and her account information. The caller offered the upgrade for a “discounted price.”

It wasn’t until Senior-Trask pressed the caller several times that she was quoted the price of $150 for the software upgrade. She declined the upgrade and ended the call.

After ending the call, Senior-Trask contacted Dish Network customer service who confirmed it was a scam and that software updates were free through the service provider.

Should any Valley residents believe they are the victims, or potential victims, of a scam it is recommended that they take as much information as possible to the local authorities.
