VSO offers $500 citizenship scholarship

Seniors graduating from Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD 2) high schools can now apply for the annual $500 Youth Citizenship Award (YCA) offered by the Valley Service Organization (VSO).

Application forms are now available from the counselor’s office at each of CCSD 2’s high schools. Home-schooled students are also eligible for this award, according to Carol Beach, YCA project chairman.

Beach said the award is not a scholarship, but rather is a cash award given directly to the student in recognition of his or her community service and understanding of what it is to be a good citizen. Completed applications should be returned by Saturday, April 14 to:

VSO

P.O. Box 1601

Saratoga, WY 82301

The winner will be honored at the organization’s May 24 meeting.

In the application, students are asked to describe their school and community involvement and activities and goals after high school. Applicants should also explain their definition of citizenship and how they applied this concept during their school years. They also are asked to tell how they plan to exemplify citizenship as an adult.

A letter of reference must accompany the application.  The letter is more fully explained in the application.

There are no strings attached to how the award is used, Beach said, emphasizing that any graduating senior in the district may apply.
