Landfill, sand volleyball, savings and sound

Med Bow town council hears about landfill closure grant, considers volleyball team, puts money into savings, approves purchase of community hall sound system

The Medicine Bow town council met at 6 p.m. on Feb. 12. Toby Smith, council member board member of High Country Joint Powers Board (HCJPB), told the council that a grant had been applied for from State Loan and Investment Board (SLIB) to help with the closure of the Hanna Landfill.

Routine business of approving the minutes and paying the financials preceded Karen Heath, town clerk and treasurer, who asked the council, on behalf of resident Kristi Brennan, if the Fire Department would consider forming a sand volleyball team consisting of three people and perhaps some alternates to compete with other fire department teams to raise money for the departments.

Kevin Colman, mayor, said he would present the request to the Medicine Bow Fire Department at their next meeting.

Heath recommended funds sitting in a checking account to be moved to earn interest. The council approved putting $150,000 into a savings account, $30,000 in a new Wyostar account and $20,000 into a five year CD.

Sharon Biamon, town council member, said there was strong interest in a new sound system for the town council meeting room at the community hall. The council approved a purchase of a sound system for up to $2,400 from Full Compass that would add 3 more microphones in addition to the standard system.

Charlie George, Public Works Director, said he had purchased a sewer camera to help pinpoint leaks so he would not have to dig up entire lines to find clogs. George said he had attended a floodplain class where he had received 32 hours of instruction. The class is necessary in case the town needed to apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency funds.

Smith said the HCJPB applied for the $1.8 million grant from the State Lands and Investments Board. He said they had asked for a 75-25 percent split. He said they would know in the near future if this grant was approved.

The next scheduled town council meeting will be at 6 p.m. on March 12 at the Medicine Bow Community Hall.
