Youth downfall in Miner loss to Vikings

HEM football coach sees positives in 81-44 loss to upperclassmen heavy Guernsey-Sunrise

Zack Scott, the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School football coach said in the beginning of the season, he had a young team and there were going to be some games that would be difficult.

The Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings were one of those teams Scott knew was laden with upperclassmen players that proved to a bit too much for the young Miners to overcome.

The score of 81-44 takes away from of the bright spots Scott sees with his team.

“Even with the loss, we learned and became better football players,” Scott said.

The passing game was strong with Shane McGraw passing for 312 yards and Tylor Goodro racking up 116 yards. Brendon Reeves received for 95 yards and two touchdowns and Conor McGraw received for 299 yards with four touchdowns and another touchdown on a kickoff return.

Basil Phillips and Josh Lee both scored kicking points.

Rushing against the Vikings was where the young team had trouble.

Shane carried 14 times getting 70 yards averaging five yards a carry. The second leading rusher for the game was his brother Conor, who carried six times for 17 yards averaging 2.8 yards.

Conor led in tackles. He had nine solo and seven assisted for a total of 16 tackles. Both Jon Nelsen and Phillips had four solo and four assisted for a total of eight tackles. Shane had five solo and two assisted for a total of seven tackles.

Scott is pleased with his team’s progress even if it doesn’t translate into a win.

“The kids are growing each week,” Scott said. “This week will be another week to grow with our young team.”

The Miners will be facing NSI Academy in Sheridan at 6 p.m Oct. 13.
