Local American Legion Post 54 and Platte Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6125 (VFW) will hold memorial services Monday for those who died while serving in the United States of America Armed Forces.

The American Legion will be placing flags on veterans’ graves Friday May 27 at 4 p.m., said Deb Clark, adjutant for the American Legion.

Also on Friday, VFW members will put up the Avenue of Flags in the Encampment Cemetery and in the Mountain View Cemetery east of Riverside, said VFW Commander Liz Wood. For the second year, Congressional Award Members, led by Janice Peterson of Encampment, will be placing small flags on veterans’ graves Friday afternoon to honor all veterans buried in those cemeteries, said Wood.

Monday, the American Legion will host a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the Valley Chapel highlighted by a 21-gun salute. Following the service, there will be a barbecue at noon at the American Legion post, which will be open to the public. Entry is by donation.

At 11 a.m. on Monday, the VFW will hold a Memorial Day ceremony for the fallen at the Encampment cemetery and the public is invited to attend and lay a wreath in memory of their loved ones. The Avenue of Flags will be on display until after this ceremony.
