Embezzlement investigation

Saratoga resident charged with three felonies

In a Dec. 9 affidavit and Dec. 10 charge sheet, Sherry Kunz, of Saratoga, is alleged to have stolen nearly $40,000 from Spur Outfitters, LLC.

Charged with felony counts of theft, obtaining property by false pretenses and forgery, Kunz faces up to 30 years in prison and up to $30,000 in fines according to the charge document. Kunz had her first appearance in the Circuit Court of the 2nd Judicial District in Rawlins on Dec. 21 and she will have a preliminary hearing at 4 p.m. on Dec. 30 in Rawlins.

In the affidavit taken by Carbon County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Shue it is alleged that Kunz misappropriated funds from approximately 40 checks into her personal bank accounts and used checks to pay for goods and services for herself. The total amount of funds allegedly taken by Kunz is close to $40,000 according to the affidavit. Kunz allegedly wrote Spur Outfitters checks to a few retail stores and people, including one fictionalized persona.

The affidavit states that the misappropriated funds were discovered during an internal audit at which point the sheriff's office was called. The affidavit also lists Kunz as a former employee of Spur Outfitters who had authorization to handle checks and receive goods for the company.

The dates of the allegedly misused checks range from Oct. 2014 to Sept. 2015, according to the affidavit.
