Daycare, ordinance updates

Town touches base at council meeting

Saratoga Town Councilperson Will Faust brought an update on the oft-discussed issue of daycare in Saratoga at the Dec. 1 Saratoga Town Council Meeting. After meeting with the team of volunteers working to get a daycare in town as well as Jamie Stine, of Developmental Preschool and Daycare, the group identified a problem of staffing, square footage and minor repairs in the preschools.

In order to move forward, the town needs to complete a feasibility study. According to Faust, the updated numbers will provide ammunition for ExCel and a daycare. It would illustrate a need very clearly, which would hopefully encourage private funding.

Ordinance no. 832, the home occupation ordinance, has been updated and was presented at the meeting. Updates from the original version include a removal of the terminology "such as lawn care or tree services" from section B, item no. 10 of the ordinance, as not to pigeonhole themselves, Faust reported. Section B, item no. 11 was added, which reads that "Home childcare business as allowed under Wyoming Department of Family Services Licensing Rules" is a permitted home occupation. "Nursery schools" has been removed from the list of prohibited home occupations, and wording in the zoning ordinances will be changed regarding special use permits.

Mayor Ed Glode announced that there will be two vacancies on the planning commission come the end of the year, adding that he has received several letters about the positions.

Director of public works Jon Winter arranged a demonstration of the new sewer camera at the start of the meeting, with council members and audience members observing its functions. The troublesome variable frequency drives (VFDs) that have been routinely breaking at the water well in the past several months have been addressed further, with Winter announcing that his department has begun communicating with experts about how to best approach the issue.

In an update from the police department, Saratoga Police Chief Tom Knickerbocker announced that he and Grayling Wachsmuth, Encampment Police Chief, were scheduled to attend meth lab training last week.

The next Saratoga Town Council Meeting is Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. at Saratoga Town Hall.
