Killing Elk
Several hunters returned just as the season closed from hunting deer in the Elk Mountain country. The deer seemed to be more plentiful than usual, with the result that most of the hunters from here were successful. Several of the hunters state that they saw the evidence of where two elk had been killed.
The elk were shipped in here with the understanding that they would be protected by all of the citizens, giving them a good start in this locality again. To that end the government restocked these mountains with about 65 elk, which arrived here two years ago and were cared for during the winter and driven into the hills in the spring where they are doing fine on the old elk haunts of the past.
It is indeed sad news that anyone would wantonly destroy what all the citizens have given their words to protect. It is almost impossible for game wardens to protect these animals if there is not help from the citizens, and anyone knowing anything of this kind should report it to the authorities, so that some action be taken. If anyone is caught killing these elk, they should be dealt with in a fitting manner.

The Temperatures
Old man Winter took another swipe at the Platte valley this week with a blanket of snow during Monday night and Tuesday, and last night pushed the official government thermometer down to one degree below zero for the first time this season. The precipitation reading as a result of the storm was 0.28 in., and at the present time the ground is covered with about four inches of snow.

Improvements Made At Hobo Pool Area
Improvement work at the Hobo pool has been completed through matching funds provided by the Town and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hollingsworth of Palm Beach, Fla.
Included in the project was the erection of a concrete block wall around the south end of the area, placing of hangers for bathrobes and increasing the height of the wall around the pool area. Additional guard rails were installed for the convenience of elderly persons using the pool.
Total cost of the project was $450, with the Town providing half and the Hollingsworths the rest.
Purpose of the three-foot high wall is to serve as a wind break and to keep litter from being blown into the pool.

Superman star selected to be 1991 Ice Fishing Derby Kingfish
When Christopher Reeve, star of the Superman movies, dropped out of the sky to spend a night in Saratoga Wyoming, last winter, little did he know he would be invited back to the community to reign as Kingfish over the 1991 Saratoga Ice Fishing Derby January 19 and 20.
Reeve visited Saratoga during a cross-country solo airplane trip, spent the night in town, soaked in the Saratoga Hot Springs, and generally made a great impression on the folks of the community, Fishing Derby Chairman Shawn McBride said.
Then, on a national television talk show he described his visit in glowing terms but couldn’t remember our name. For this reason we are happy to have named him Kingfish in our 1991 Ice Fishing Derby to thank him for the kind words and also to remind him of our name, Saratoga. We also have named our $5,000 prize trout, Superfish.”
As Kingfish, the well-known actor, has been invited to attend the Derby and will receive the remarkable Kingfish Creel that contains everything anyone needs for successful ice fishing.
“We have been in contact with the Kingfish’s staff and he would like to return to Saratoga for the Derby, but doesn’t know if he can fit it into his schedule. We are hoping he can,” McBride said.
