DPW director hired

Fridays with the Mayor

Mayor Ed Glode said the town of Saratoga has hired a new Director of Public Works.

Jon Winters, of Douglas, has accepted the position and is scheduled to start work on Sept. 21 Glode said.

The Saratoga Town Council was expected to ratify the hiring at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Winter has experience with the permitting process, as he worked in the uranium mining industry, Glode said. Winters familiar with DEQ and the Army Corps of Engineers permitting processes.

When asked about traffic complaints raised at the Sept. 1 Saratoga Town Council meeting, Glode said that a solution will come with the police department working closely with the town.

“Well, it’s going to be a communication between us (the town) and the police department,” Glode said of cooperation between the two groups, adding that they will have to decide which laws to enforce. “We most certainly don’t want to start harassing the tourists and citizens of Saratoga. I’d have to move,” Glode joked.

“Really, I think they’re waiting for direction from me,” Glode said.

At the most recent town council meeting, the council discussed a plot of land next to Wood’s Field and what should be done with it. Glode said that it will be an extension of the recreation space because it was donated to the town by George Wood in order to be a baseball field.

Glode said of the baseball field that the large field had to be completed first before they could consider the smaller field, noting that they are discussing tee-ball or potentially soccer. Glode said that matters of irrigation to the area will have to be resolved, as well. “If anyone has any ideas let us know,” Glode added.

While that specific space cannot be used for business, which many citizens in the Platte Valley are calling for, Glode said a plan to incentivize business is currently in infancy stages, noting that there is talk of business districts north of town and on the north side of the airport behind the school.
