The Saratoga Panthers football squad was beat in a 13-49 non-conference game against the Lingle/Fort Laramie Doggers last Friday.
Lettermen Rodrigo Escobedo, Thatcher Spiering, Cameron Lehr and Alex Ziegler were called on regularly to run the ball in the away game. Sophomore Ben Fairbanks also ran the ball twice. The Panthers rushed for a total of 153 yards, 99 of which came during the fourth quarter.
Escobedo and Spiering scored all of the points for the Panthers in the fourth quarter. Escobedo scored on a 3 yard run and Spiering took the ball in on an 18 yard run. Escobedo kicked the PAT taking the Panthers to 13 points after Speirnig’s touchdown.
Head Coach Scott Bokelman said the Panthers became more confident as the game progressed, especially in defensive aggressiveness and tackling. Special teams also played a solid game according to Bokelman.
Ziegler broke a 27 yard end-around that almost led to a touchdown in the second quarter. That misdirection play seemed to work well in the Panthers offensive arsenal dominated by dives and powers. The two failed pass attempts were an effort to change things up and get the Doggers defense thinking about other types of plays according to Bokelman.
Bokelman noted that the Panthers players had fun, and that is the main point of the game.
The Panthers gridders host their first home game Friday against the defending state champion Cokeville Panthers Friday at 4 p.m.
