Trial date set for Ryan Simmons

Charged with seven felonies, Ryan Scott Simmons of Saratoga, was found fit to proceed to trial at an Aug. 24 judicial hearing. The trial date is set for 9 a.m., Oct. 27 at the Carbon County District Court in Rawlins.

According to Circuit Court documents, the seven charges include three counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder, three counts of Aggravated Assault and Battery and one count of Felony Interference with a Peace Officer.

The charges stem from the April 27, 2014 incident in which Ryan was shot twice by Saratoga Police Officer George Phillips. Phillips was responding to a domestic problem complaint during which Ryan allegedly fought with his mother, Becky Simmons and her husband Richard Simmons, attacking them with a “military style knife,” according to a May 1, 2014 affidavit. The affidavit also states that Ryan lunged at Phillips with the knife before he was shot.

Ryan Simmons has entered pleas of not guilty to the seven charges. Those pleas can be changed and a plea agreement can still be made before the scheduled Sept. 28 pretrial conference according to an Amended Criminal Case Management Order filed on Aug. 26.
