Been fun ... Gotta run

I saw the ad for the internship at the Saratoga Sun at the beginning of June when I was driving with my dad to Rock Springs for one of my way-too-common knee drain appointments. I had been waiting on another summer job to call me back for a while and was starting to get impatient. I called Liz at the Sun right away and we talked about the position and shortly after, I got the job.

Both my dad and I were so excited because we knew this would be the perfect opportunity for me. I got plenty of experience with writing during high school with Mr. Patrick and in layout things with Mr. Mason and my yearbook class. I was bound to try my hand on a newspaper someday.

Working at the Sun this summer has really been a good time. I’m a Communications Major, so I felt like I fit right in at the office. Although Liz was out of the office half of the time I was there (I got to sit at her desk while she was gone), I enjoyed working for her. Being an employee at the newspaper has really opened my eyes to what that line of work is all about.

I never realized before the complexity of the newspaper. There are so many details that go into each issue. Interviewing people and writing stories were fun, and getting compliments on my stories made me feel like I was doing well. I was even getting to the point where I enjoyed Keith’s stupid office jokes daily. I’ll miss it … the jokes, not Keith.

Oddly enough, I’ll really miss our office cat, August. Our new reporter, Maddy, got a kitten just after she started the job. When she would take lunch or leave the office, Keith and I got to be the official kitten-sitters. We were basically professionals. Most days she would bring him in and each of us would lose at least an hour of work during the day easily because the kitten was just too cute not to play with.

The summer went entirely too fast for me. I’m back up in Riverton now; volleyball started this week and I’m regretting not staying fit during the summer months. It won’t take long for me to get back into shape with how often we’re working out though (five hours of practice per day). Staying busy at the Sun is a good enough excuse for not working out this summer to me.

I’ll see you around winter break, Saratoga. If you need me, I’ll be up in Riverton probably running, running and … running.
