Laramie woman rescued from Medicine Bow Peak after snowboarding accident

Rescue teams from Carbon and Albany Counties worked for about six hours on July 4 to rescue a 20 year old Laramie woman who was injured while snowboarding down Medicine Bow Peak above Lake Marie on the Carbon and Albany County line.

According to Carbon County Sheriff Jerry Colson, his office was notified a little after 9 a.m. July 4 that Emma Chafin was injured while attempting to snowboard down the front of Medicine Bow Peak through a snow field above Lake Marie.

Chafin and four others had hiked to the top of Medicine Bow Peak early on the morning of the fourth. She rolled through a boulder field about 50 yards long when she fell. Chafin was able to grab a boulder at the end of the boulder field which prevented her from tumbling further down the mountain.

One of her companions drove to Centennial and called 911. Rescue personnel trained in high angle rescue reached Emma up on the mountain. She was carried down the mountain on a rescue sled to the shoreline of Lake Marie where she was then taken across the lake on a rubber raft. She was put in an ambulance and taken to Laramie for treatment.

Chafin sustained some minor injuries although she was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. She was reportedly hypothermic from lying in the snow according to Sheriff Colson. The rescue mission ended shortly after 3 p.m.
