Freshman year under my belt

I have been home from college for a couple of months now. Everywhere I go it seems that I run into somebody who is interested in knowing what my first year away from home was like (which I love). It is so nice being from a small community where people are friendly. I figured there is no better place to explain than here.

Things went fairly smooth my first year at Central Wyoming College. The biggest challenge for me was being away from home. I missed seeing my dad every night for dinner. When I moved, we were apart for a couple of weeks at a time. During the spring semester, I came home on the weekends every chance I got.

The homesickness really kicked in after only a few weeks at college. I made constant phone calls home and let my dad know how much I missed him.

I took 18 credit hours my first semester with general classes. They were Varsity Volleyball, Weight Loss Conditioning, English Composition I, Interpersonal Communication, Algebra, Orientation to College and Digital Photography. I completed all my classes that semester with a 3.778 grade point average (GPA).

The second semester I took classes that were starting to lean more toward my communications degree. I had Public Speaking, American and Wyoming Government, Problem Solving, English Comp II, Nonverbal Communication, Conflict Management and Mediation, Heavy Resistance, Volleyball and Personal Financial Planning. Altogether it was 21 credit hours, which was way too many. Somehow I still finished it with a 4.0 GPA.

I play volleyball for the Central Wyoming College Rustlers. I had known my coach for six years because I attended the summer camp that she has put on since I was in seventh grade. She knew how I played and offered me the position on the team. Toward the end of preseason, I decided to red shirt my first season. It meant that I would still practice and do everything normal with the team, but I would not play in the game. That way, I had time to sharpen up my skills. It was a difficult decision to make but I am glad I did it because I have gotten so much better than before.

Central Wyoming College is only a two-year school. However, I have the opportunity to go an extra year to play volleyball. My associate's degree will be completed after this coming year so I am not sure if I will stay, but I like to have options!

Volleyball players at the college all live in the same area on campus. Housing puts us in the apartments that have two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living area and a kitchen. This was something else that I had to adjust to at college. It was just my dad and me at home. I didn't really have to share my living space. In my apartment in Riverton, there were three other girls. Four girls in one apartment makes for a crowded bathroom, but we all got along and they made my college experience fun.

My second year of school should be even more fun than my first. I will be taking Intro to Film Production, Broadcast Writing, Persuasion, Intro to Radio Broadcasting, Introduction to Mass Media and Athletic Dept. Internship.

The first day of class is August 31. I am looking forward to playing volleyball with my new teammates and starting my sophomore year of college in a couple of short months!
