Council approves 10k to upgrade PD servers

The Saratoga Town Council approved a $10,000 payment to upgrade the police servers. The current server has lasted for seven years. The servers will be migrated likely in November for the upgrade. The police are optimistic that they will get a long wear, Captain Rob Bifano told council at their regular meeting June 16.

Mayor Glode remarked he plans to add community reports during Council meetings. This would be a time for community groups—such as the Boy Scouts or school students working on town projects—to report on the status of their organization and tell the board what they have been up to.

The Saratoga Council passed the first review for a Specialty Crop Block Grant from the Department of Agriculture, a feat for small towns.

Cindy Bloomquist, the chairman of the Community Garden Board, said that very few small towns get past the first review.

The grant, which is up to $24,500 and is matched by 25 percent in kind, will not cost the town any extra money, but will enrich the education of local students, Bloomquist said.

According to Bloomquist, raised beds, known as hugelkultur, will be erected throughout the town. German for “hill culture”, these mounds feature different kinds of wood inside of them that decay and provide an excellent environment for fruits and vegetables. Typically, hugelkulturs involve hardwood, but Bloomquist is excited for the possibility of pine. She says that there are three main benefits behind this project—community, possibility of production and education. “You can just, every two weeks, sit for an hour and take pictures of the bugs,” Bloomquist said. “And then you take pictures of the bugs without the cool [flowers] and see what you see.” This type of experimentation is vital to learning about science and could greatly impact the public and how we understand the ecosystem we live in.

The town submitted the grant proposal for the second review process on June 19.

The next town council meeting is 6 p.m. July 7 at Saratoga Town Hall.
