No landfill fee increase, yet

Richard Hodges caused confusion in the audience during the Saratoga Town Council meeting when he announced that Sierra Madre Solid Waste Disposal District (Landfill Board) had passed the third reading of an ordinance to increase landfill fees from $17 to $20 at their May meeting.

Guy Jansa asked the mayor why the ordinance wasn’t passed through the town council like other ordinances. Mayor Ed Glode said the Landfill Board is a Joint Powers Board and includes Encampment and Saratoga.

Randy Raymer, Landfill Board chairman, stated May 20 that the board had not passed any such ordinance.

“Richard Hodges is not a member of the Landfill Board and does not have authority to speak on our behalf,” Raymer said.

The Landfill Board has had public discussion about an increase in anticipation of the transfer station that is required by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), but a final draft has not been completed because of lack of members present at the May meeting.

Raymer said the discussion will continue at the June 3 meeting, which is held at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga Town Hall. The meetings are open to the public.
