Bird watching with BLM

In celebration of International Migratory Bird Day, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rawlins Field Office held a free Bird Song Identification Class last Thursday and a bird walk at Saratoga Lake on Saturday.

During the course, Sandra Taylor, Biological Science Technician, presented an overview of 17 common birds that are found in range lands throughout the region. At that time, Taylor gave on overview of the distinctive markings that distinguishes each bird, an interesting fact about the bird, as well as a sample of the birds "song". Frank Blomquist, Wildlife Biologist, provided additional facts throughout the course.

The bird walk was held at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Saratoga Lake Campground. There the group walked around the lake while identifying different birds that were on or near the lake. A highlight of the walk was when a Bald Eagle was seen stealing a fish from an Osprey during flight.

According the Taylor, the BLM would like to hold another bird walk event sometime early summer for a hopefully more warmer weather walk.
