Sage-Grouse inventory highlights conservation efforts

The Western Governors Association published in March 2015 the Sage-Grouse Inventory of 2014 Conservation Initiatives where local company Carbon Power and Light was highlighted.

The inventory was done to outline and highlight the conservation efforts that have been completed to date as well as planned conservation efforts, 2015 and beyond.

According to the report, sage-grouse was listed as “warranted but precluded” under the Endangered Species Act in 2010 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Carbon Power and Light was mentioned in the inventory as an energy company that is avoiding leks during construction to minimize disturbance. This management practice is in accordance with the Governor’s Executive Order 2011-5 which discusses changes while working in sage-grouse Core Population Areas.

Initiatives within the state of Wyoming were included within the inventory. It noted that since 2006, funding has been approved for more than 70 conservation easements covering 150,000 acres and Wyoming has $100 million set aside for long-term habitat conservation.

Future initiatives in Wyoming for sage-grouse are underway. The State is updating its Comprehensive Plan where it will include future recommendations for continued sage-grouse protection.
